What Is RAM?

RAM is a device’s short-term working memory. Here is what RAM does, why more can help, and why it is not the same as storage.

RAM, short for Random Access Memory, is the short-term working memory a device uses while tasks are actively running. It holds data that the system and apps need quick access to right now.

RAM Is Not Long-Term Storage

This is the main confusion point. RAM is temporary working space. Storage, like an SSD or hard drive, keeps files long term. When you turn a device off, the contents of RAM are cleared.

That is why RAM and storage both matter but solve different problems.

What More RAM Helps With

More RAM usually helps with multitasking. If you keep many browser tabs, apps, or large files open at once, extra RAM gives the system more room to work without slowing down as quickly.

It can also help certain creative tools, virtual machines, and games, though the benefit depends on the workload.

What Happens When You Run Low

When RAM fills up, the system has to work harder by moving data around or relying more on slower storage-based fallback methods. That often causes apps to feel sluggish, switch more slowly, or reload unexpectedly.
